Impact of prostate cancer treatment explored

Treatment for prostate cancer impairs sexual and urinary function but has no impact on other health issues.
It is known that surgery for prostate cancer can have some adverse side effects. But some of these are indistinguishable from the aging process. Doctors at the New Mexico Veterans Administration Health Care System in Albuquerque have carried out the first comparison study on men who have and have not been treated for prostate cancer. This enabled them to see which issues where related just to prostate cancer treatment, rather than aging.

It turned out that treatment has an adverse effect on sexual function and urinary function. The healthy men also reported some decline in sexual functioning over the five year period of the study – but this was not as great as in the prostate cancer group. The good news was that treatment did not have an adverse effect on bowel function or any other health-related quality of life issue.
